YourGDL - February 2011

Working on the design of the YourGDL site, a new startup by two English law students that offers top quality, up-to-date GDL revision notes organised into problem question structures.

I've been busy recently working fulltime on some projects, they'll be slowly creeping into the portfolio over the coming weeks.

Make sure to check out yourgdl.co.uk.

Invite - August 2010 []

A modern take on a traditional letterpress style print. The invite was created in Adobe Illustrator, printed with a four colour process on both sides and printed on 300gsm Acquellero paper.

To see more work relating to the invite and other projects, please visit my portfolio.

New Designers - July 2010 []

Having been selected to exhibit rda at New Designers, Loughborough University required an exibition stand and accompanying media to promote the course and student's work.

I managed the graphic design from initial concept through to print. I also played a pivotal role in the physical stand design; producing inital concepts, sourcing the timber and in construction. See the work carried out in full here.

rda - June 2010 []

rda is an interactive chopping board that empowers users to lead a well-balanced and healthy lifestyle. Achieved by LEDs embedded below the chopping surface, a user can illuminate a suitable portion size based on two touch inputs, food type and portion size.

sam gough... a designer, coffee addict and failed athlete. I turn a hand to all things creative! Passionate about design, psychology and the web, I'm an experienced designer currently working freelance.

I've recently developed a fondness for semiotics and illustration, I haven't quite got 10,000 hours to dedicate to it but I'll give it a go... Watch this space!

On paper I'm qualified as an Industrial Designer, I like to think that I'm equally proficient at graphic design and web design.

Having spent a year working for Nokia as a Design Engineer and completing numerous freelance projects, my portfolio showcases the breadth of design work I'm capable of.

Never one to shy away from learning something new, I welcome new and exciting opportunities related to design. To find out why you should be interested in us working together click here.

Right, I just moved... and I live in the middle of nowhere! My phone get's no signal, it's green as far as the eye can see and I'm starting the trend that design needn't be confined to London.

I'm now tucked below Nottingham and a little to the left, I've got the comfort of a big city near enough without the hassle of living in it. If I'm needed in London, that's not a problem - I'm more than compotent in using the amazing British public transport network or I can drive myself down there.

Since making these they've gone slightly viral, being featured on websites such as fffound, creattica, card observer and smashing magazine (cheers by the way!)... just Google them to see what all the fuss is about!

I've received a fair few emails asking how these were made and it's no secret so here it is, I'll tell you! I simply took an off cut of walnut wood from my rda project and ran it through the bandsaw to create the overall cards. Then I created an .ai file with my logo and contact details (to scale). Then I imported the design into 2D design and printed it to a Mercury Laser Cutter with the wooden cards lying on it's bed. It took some fiddling about getting the intensity of the laser right and positioning etc. but it really was that simple...

I only made 20 and hopefully they grabbed your attention / remind you of my project. I hope you enjoyed the twentyten degree show at Loughborough University or New Designers in London. If you'd like to get in touch then contact me.
